Any product that gets popular gets counterfeited, and disposable vapes got very popular very fast. The fakes range from crude knockoffs to packaging so faithful that the only reliable tell is the authentication system itself — and tourist corridors like ours are exactly where counterfeiters like to sell, because the customer is gone in a week.

A fake isn't just a ripoff; it's an unregulated device with an unknown battery and unknown liquid. Nobody tested any of it. Here's how to check, in the order that catches the most fakes for the least effort.

The authentication code is the real test

Most major disposable brands print a scratch-off verification sticker on the box: reveal the code, enter it on the brand's official website (type the address yourself — a QR code on a counterfeit box can happily send you to a counterfeit 'verification' site), and it confirms whether the code is genuine and, critically, whether it's already been checked many times. A 'valid' code that's been queried dozens of times is a real code photocopied onto a production run of fakes.

This is the single highest-value check because it's the one thing a counterfeiter can't fake cheaply at scale. Do it at the counter before you leave — any legitimate shop will wait the thirty seconds.

The tells you can see and feel

Counterfeits give themselves away in small production details more often than big ones.

Print quality: blurry text, off-tint colors, misaligned seams on the box — authentic runs are consistent
Missing or generic warning labels where the brand normally prints them, or misspellings anywhere on the package
Weight and finish: fakes often feel lighter, with softer plastic and rattles the real device doesn't have
Flavor lists that don't exist on the brand's official site — counterfeiters invent flavors real brands never made
A price dramatically below every other store in town: the discount is the business model

Good to know: 'gray market' is the other trap — real-looking products in flavors or sizes a brand never officially released. Treat anything you can't find on the manufacturer's own website as unverifiable, whatever the sticker says.

After purchase: the device itself

If the box passed but something feels off once you're using it, trust that instinct. Where you buy is the filter that makes all the other checks mostly unnecessary.
