Glass is the souvenir category with a failure mode: it arrives home in pieces. The fixes are cheap and mostly about physics — cushion, immobilize, and keep the fragile geometry away from the load paths of your luggage.

The packing method

Wrap the piece in bubble wrap — ask us at the counter and we'll wrap it properly when you buy, and keep the box if it came in one. The vulnerable spots are the joints and any protruding parts (mouthpiece, downstem, percolator arms); those want extra layers. Remove anything removable, like a bowl or downstem, and wrap it separately so parts can't knock against each other.

In the suitcase: center of the bag, surrounded on all six sides by soft clothing, never against the shell or the wheels-and-handle side where impacts concentrate. If the piece rattles when you shake the bag gently, it isn't packed yet.

Flying with it

A brand-new, never-used glass pipe is legal to fly with in either cabin or checked bag as far as TSA is concerned — it's just glassware, like any souvenir. The complication is residue: a used pipe can be treated very differently, since residue is what turns 'glassware' into 'paraphernalia' in the eyes of many jurisdictions. The clean answer for travelers is to fly it new and unused, in its packaging, with the receipt.
