How to Keep Hemp Flower Fresh in Florida's Heat and Humidity

Hemp flower storage advice written for Colorado doesn't quite survive contact with an Orlando August. The three things that degrade flower — heat, light, and the wrong humidity — are the three things Florida supplies for free, and the difference between well-kept and badly-kept flower here shows up in weeks, not months.

None of the fixes cost much. Here's what actually matters, in order.

The enemies, ranked for Florida

Heat comes first here, because it's the one that ruins flower fastest and the one visitors underestimate. A parked car in an Orlando summer interior can pass 130°F in under an hour, and that's enough to dry flower to dust, degrade the cannabinoids you paid for (THCA in particular converts and degrades with heat over time), and cook off the terpenes that give a strain its character. Leaving product in the car during a park day is the single most common storage mistake we hear about.

Humidity is the sneaky second. Florida's ambient humidity regularly sits above 70%, and flower stored in a loosely-closed bag drinks it in. Too moist and you risk mold — flower with any musty smell or visible white fuzz is not salvageable and not worth the gamble. Too dry (from air conditioning, ironically) and it turns harsh and crumbly. The comfortable band is roughly 55–65% relative humidity.

Light finishes the list. UV degrades cannabinoids steadily, which is why serious storage is opaque or amber-tinted, and why a windowsill is the worst shelf in the house.

The setup that works

A glass jar with an airtight seal, a two-way humidity pack in the 58–62% range, and a dark cupboard shelf away from appliances that run warm. That's genuinely the whole system — the humidity pack both adds and removes moisture to hold its printed level, which in Florida mostly means removing. Replace the pack when it turns stiff, every few months.

Glass beats plastic for anything longer than a couple of weeks: bags breathe slowly, hold static that strips the flower's surface, and offer no crush protection. Keep the flower in its jar in whole buds and break it up as you use it, since ground flower exposes far more surface area to the air.

Good to know: skip the refrigerator and freezer. Every trip in and out condenses moisture onto the flower, and freezing makes the surface brittle. A consistently air-conditioned room shelf beats both.

For visitors: hotel-room storage

A week in a hotel doesn't need the full setup. Keep the product in its original sealed packaging (which also keeps the label and batch information with it — useful, since Florida ties hemp products to their lab paperwork), somewhere shaded and away from the window, and never in the car. If you bought more than the trip needs, the original packaging plus a zip bag pressed flat is a fine short-term compromise.

Buying fresher stock helps too: flower that's been sitting in a hot display case has already spent its shelf life. It's a fair question to ask any shop how they store theirs — ours lives in climate-controlled storage, and the lab paperwork for every batch is on our lab reports page if you want to check what you're buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does hemp flower stay good?

Stored well — airtight, cool, dark, right humidity — several months to a year without much loss of character. Stored in a bag in a Florida car, weeks at best.

What humidity pack should I use?

A two-way pack rated 58% or 62% RH, sized to the jar. In Florida it'll mostly be pulling moisture out, and it needs replacing once it goes rigid.
