Two numbers dominate a disposable's packaging: the puff count, printed enormous, and the nicotine strength, printed small. Buyers fixate on the first and skim the second — exactly backwards, since the strength is what determines how the device feels from the first draw.

What the percentage means

A strength like 5% describes concentration: milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid. 5% is 50 mg/mL — the strength most US disposables standardized on. 2% (20 mg/mL) is the strength you'll see on devices built for markets with stricter caps, and it's noticeably lighter. 0% means no nicotine at all; we cover that category separately.

The key mental model: percentage is intensity, capacity is duration. A 5% device with 20 mL isn't 'stronger' than a 5% device with 10 mL — it just lasts longer at the same intensity.

Why the same strength can feel different

Nearly all disposables use nicotine salts, a formulation that delivers smoother at high concentrations than the older freebase liquids in refillable systems. Device design matters too — airflow, coil and wattage shape how much vapor (and therefore nicotine) each draw carries. That's why a 5% device from one brand can feel gentler than a 5% from another. The label sets the concentration; the hardware shapes how each draw actually feels.

If a device feels harsher or lighter than its label suggests, the label isn't lying — the hardware is different. Compare strengths within a brand line, not across brands.

Reading the label like the shop does

On the back panel, look for three things: the strength (as % or mg/mL), the e-liquid capacity in mL, and the federally required nicotine warning. A legitimate label carries all three, printed cleanly. Is 5% a lot?

It's the standard strength for US disposables, designed around former smokers. If you find 5% harsh, 2–3% versions of several brands we carry are the gentler path.

Does a higher puff count mean more nicotine per puff?

No. Puff count estimates duration; the strength percentage sets the liquid's concentration. A 25,000-puff 5% device and a 9,000-puff 5% device use the same strength liquid — the bigger one just lasts longer.
